An empirical work is a scientific work in which certain information and data from reality (experience = empiricism) are collected independently in order to answer a certain question. The types of data collection are manifold. These can be surveys, interviews, observations, text analyses, experiments, test series, simulations and variations of these methods.
What are the advantages of empirical work?
The advantages are:
- own data material instead of only literature
- Personal contribution is clearly defined
- sometimes better grade possible
- clear guidelines for procedures
- many methodological sources
- You can be creative
- You can learn more
- You can gain reputation
What are the disadvantages of a literary work?
The disadvantages are:
- One is dependent on others
- Lead time needed to learn methods
- possibly more time needed
- somewhat uncertain outcome
- possibly more workload
- possible costs for surveys and experts
What does a theme for an empirical work look like?
As is the case with other types of work. The difference lies in the data sources and methods.

What are the challenges of empirical work and how do I master them?
1. You need to find a real research gap!
You have to ask a real question that has not been answered before. For this you have to evaluate real scientific studies. Books are not enough, by far not. 95% of the studies are in English, have their own language and require a great deal of knowledge in the subject area. Because the analyses come from experts who have been researching such questions for a long time. And then you have to find the research gap first. So much has already been researched. This is not so easy even for experienced researchers.
The Thesis Guide takes you by the hand and guides you step by step through this process with the chocolate topic. You HAVE to write an exposé. We’ll show you HOW and WHAT belongs in it!
2. You have to work with new methods!
Most likely this is your first empirical analysis. The methods are new. Time is short, you have to create a questionnaire or evaluate an interview. But HOW???? You have to win participants who collect data. But HOW????
In the Thesis Guide you will find an overview of the methods and detailed instructions for working with them. You also have concrete examples and templates of all kinds.
3. You must gain real NEW insights!
You do not have any sources to copy for your own work in the empirical work. Empirical work is creative. Something NEW has to come. The NEW is apparently only clear at the end. But not with us! With the Thesis Guide you know very early how the results and insights look like.
With our Thesis Guide you can see the end of the work at the very beginning, based on proven patterns and examples for the initial situation, key question, detailed questions and formulation of objectives. This makes YOUR result clear, right from the start. This even makes working fun!
What’s the best way to start my empirical work?
Start with the research question and the topic and the appropriate sources! What kind of answers do you want to get for which questions? Then follow this standardized procedure in the Aristolo Thesis Guide:
- Write an exposé,
- specifically filter books and fill theory chapters,
- Collect the state of research by means of study evaluation and write chapters,
- Superior analysis methods (research methods) and describe them,
- Obtain and evaluate information, data and arguments from sources,
- gain new insights by means of analyses
- Draw conclusions, write chapters on results and finish work.
How can the Aristolo Thesis Guide help with empirical work?
In the Thesis Guide you will find detailed descriptions of the contents of all chapters with microquestions, sample formulations, tools of all kinds, file templates for all kinds of tasks such as interview guide, questionnaire template etc.
